Following WHS requirements and to ensure the safety of participants, The Distillery reserves the right to immediately remove participants from printmaking activities if we feel a student is at risk of being in an unsafe environment.This beginner half-day workshop is designed to introduce you to the historical relief printing technique of letterpress by offering hands-on experience with a midcentury Vandercook 219AB handfed cylinder proof press! Delve into letterpress history and methods, learn the fundamentals of typography while playing with bassackward’s collection of wood type, walk through the process of type composition and lockup, and experience the process of setting up and inking the press, pulling prints, and studio best practices including safe operation and proper breakdown and clean up. Health and safety is the highest priority of this workshop. During letterpress printing, all jewellery including rings, necklaces and bracelets must be removed.Long hair must be tied back into a short length.No excessively loose or flappy clothing.No prior knowledge is required, however for safety purposes the following are strict requirements for participants. Passionate about process, technique and teaching, your guides will help you experience and appreciate the beauty and fun of letterpress printing. You’ll meet and be guided by Tom Scarcella, Julian Henderson, and James Fonseca.
